Marrakech Practical Information — Eric's Guide

French citizens don't need a visa for Morocco (stays under 90 days). The currency is the dirham (€1 ≈ 11 MAD). Weather in Marrakech: 20-25°C in winter, 35-45°C in summer, sunshine nearly year-round. The airport is 20 min from the centre. Complete guide by Eric, a French resident since 2011.

Visa and formalities: it is simple

French, Belgian and Swiss nationals do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. You'll need a passport valid for at least 6 months after your return date. Budget airlines (Ryanair, EasyJet, Transavia) connect major European cities to Marrakech from €50 return.

Money and Exchange Rates

The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). The exchange rate is approximately €1 = 11 MAD. You cannot buy dirhams abroad — change on arrival. ATMs and currency exchange bureaux are located at the airport and all over the medina (there's one about 200 metres from the riad). Bank cards are accepted in hotels and restaurants, but plan on carrying cash for the souks and taxis — it's essential for bargaining.

Airport and transfer

Marrakech-Menara airport is 6 km / 20 minutes from the centre. Eric arranges your transfer. If you arrive from Casablanca, expect 2h30 by motorway (€100-120 by private taxi). › All direct flights to Marrakech

Security: Marrakech is safe

The city is safe for tourists. The tourist police are present in the medina and in the squares. Like everywhere, stay alert in crowded areas. The Dar El Bacha neighbourhood, where Riad Vendôme is located, is one of the quietest and safest in the medina — it's the neighbourhood of the Royal Palace.

Dress code

Morocco is a tolerant Muslim country. In the medina, it is respectful to cover shoulders and knees, especially for women. In the hotels, restaurants and modern neighbourhoods (Gueliz, Hivernage), the dress code is relaxed. At Riad Vendôme, you are at home — swimsuits welcome in the jacuzzi and pool.

Souks and shopping

The souks are open every day from 9:00 to 20:00. Some close Friday at noon. Morning is the best time to bargain — vendors are more relaxed and the streets less crowded. In Gueliz (new town): shops open Mon-Sat 9:00-12:30 and 15:30-19:00. And Eric's tip: start by offering a third of the asking price. Bargaining is an art and a pleasure — not a fight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a visa for Morocco?

Most travellers do not: nationals of the EU, the UK, the US, Canada and many other countries need no visa for a tourist stay of up to 90 days, with a passport valid for at least 6 months. Some nationalities do need one, and we issue a free proof of accommodation in under 24 hours for guests who book. Full details on our Morocco tourist visa page.

What is the exchange rate?

Approximately €1 = 11 MAD. ATMs at the airport and in the medina. Bank cards accepted in hotels.

Is it hot in winter?

18-25°C during the day, cool at night (5-10°C). Sunny and very pleasant to visit.

Is the airport far?

6 km / 20 min by taxi. Eric arranges the transfers with an approved licensed transport partner.

Can you pay by card?

In hotels and restaurants, yes. Plan on cash for the souks and taxis.

Is haggling compulsory?

In the souks, yes — it's the tradition. Start by offering a third of the price. It is a game, not a confrontation.

How long is the flight to Marrakech from the US and Canada?

There are no non-stop flights from the United States; from New York allow about 8 to 9 hours via Casablanca on Royal Air Maroc, which hubs there. From Canada, Royal Air Maroc runs a seasonal non-stop from Montreal to Casablanca, then a short connection to Marrakech. The riad is about 20 minutes from Marrakech-Menara airport, and US, Canadian and EU citizens do not need a visa for stays under 90 days.

Where exactly is Riad Vendome located in Marrakech?

Riad Vendome is at 217 Derb El Halfaoui, in the Dar El Bacha district of the Marrakech medina. It is a 7-minute walk from Jemaa El-Fna square, close to the Koutoubia and the souks, so you reach the main sights on foot without needing a taxi. A member of staff meets you at the nearest vehicle drop-off point on arrival.

How do I book, and how quickly do you reply?

You book directly with the riad, not through a platform. Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp at +212 600 608 608 and you receive a written quote within 24 hours. There is no automated booking engine: every stay is confirmed by a person, and the payment terms are set out in the quote you receive.

Can the whole riad be privatised, and for how many guests?

Yes, Riad Vendome can be hired exclusively. The main riad has 12 rooms and goes up to 20 rooms with our second riad 100 metres away, for exclusive hire of up to 45 guests. During an exclusive hire there are no other guests: the pool, hammam, jacuzzi and rooftop are reserved for your group alone.

Do I have one single contact for the rooms, the activities and the transfers?

Yes. Éric, the owner since 2011, handles the accommodation, the airport transfer and the excursions from a single WhatsApp number, +212 600 608 608, with a written quote within 24 hours. You do not book the riad on one site, the transfer on another and the excursion on a third: the schedule is put together in one go, with an approved licensed transport partner for the road legs.

Can I come by car, and where do I park?

Yes. There is free parking 100 metres from the riad, and car access is via Bab Doukkala or Bab El Khemis. The last 100 metres are on foot because the alleys of the old medina are pedestrian; Éric or a member of staff comes to meet you at the car park and carries the luggage. Tell us your arrival time on WhatsApp +212 600 608 608 so someone is waiting rather than you calling from the car.

How do I get from Marrakech-Menara airport to the riad, and how much is it?

Marrakech-Menara is about 20 minutes away. The riad arranges a private transfer with an approved licensed transport partner: €15 by day and €17 at night for 2 guests. The driver waits with a sign and drops you at the car park 100 metres from the door, since the medina alleys are pedestrian, and we meet you there. On a direct booking of 3 nights or more the return transfer is complimentary. Send your flight number to Éric on WhatsApp +212 600 608 608.

Marrakech Essentials — Practical Travel Guide 2026

Getting there: Direct flights from London (Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted) take 3.5 hours. Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways, TUI and Royal Air Maroc all serve Marrakech Menara Airport. Return flights can be found from €50. The airport is 6km from the medina — taxi €8, or transfer arranged by Eric.

Currency: Moroccan Dirham (MAD). 1 EUR ≈ 15 MAD (2026). ATMs widely available in the medina. Most riads and restaurants accept cards, but souks prefer cash. Tipping is expected: 10-15% in restaurants, 10-20 MAD for guides.

Best time to visit: March-May and September-November. Temperatures 20-28°C, low humidity. July-August reaches 40°C+. Ramadan (dates vary) affects restaurant hours but creates a unique atmosphere.

The medina: Marrakech has two distinct areas — the medina (old walled city, souks, riads, Jemaa El-Fna) and Gueliz (the modern French-built city, restaurants, boutiques). Riad Vendôme is in the Dar El Bacha quarter of the medina, one of the finest and most authentic neighbourhoods.

Safety: Marrakech is a safe city for tourists. Standard urban precautions apply: keep valuables close in the souks, ignore unofficial guides who approach you. The medina is best explored on foot with a map downloaded offline. Wear comfortable walking shoes — the derbs (alleyways) are uneven.
