Practical Tips for First-Time Visitors to Marrakech

A few pieces of information that repeat across guest conversations with Éric and Naima: First, the medina is not as intimidating as travel forums suggest. Dar El Bacha is one of the most navigable quarters — wider streets, less aggressive vendor pressure than the areas around Jemaa El Fna. Getting lost is part of the experience and is never unsafe. Second, cash is still king in the souks. Bring MAD (Moroccan dirham) in small denominations — many carpet and artisan shops don't have card machines.

Third, the best time to visit the Jemaa El Fna is at sunset, not midday. The square transforms from a dusty daytime market to an extraordinary sensory spectacle once the light drops — food stalls ignite, musicians set up, storytellers gather crowds. Arrive at 6:30pm and stay for 90 minutes. Fourth, the hammam requires 90 minutes minimum. Don't rush it. Schedule it on Day 1 so your skin benefits for the rest of the trip.

Fifth: negotiate everything in the souks, but do so with good humour and walk away if the price doesn't suit you. The first price quoted is typically 200–300% of the seller's target. A confident counter-offer at 40% of the asking price is not rude — it's expected. Naima offers an optional guided souk walk for guests who want to shop confidently without the stress.

Where exactly is Riad Vendome located in Marrakech?

Riad Vendome is at 217 Derb El Halfaoui, in the Dar El Bacha district of the Marrakech medina. It is a 7-minute walk from Jemaa El-Fna square, close to the Koutoubia and the souks, so you reach the main sights on foot without needing a taxi. A member of staff meets you at the nearest vehicle drop-off point on arrival.

Can the whole riad be privatised, and for how many guests?

Yes, Riad Vendome can be hired exclusively. The main riad has 12 rooms and goes up to 20 rooms with our second riad 100 metres away, for exclusive hire of up to 45 guests. During an exclusive hire there are no other guests: the pool, hammam, jacuzzi and rooftop are reserved for your group alone.

Is the riad suitable for a guest with reduced mobility?

Partly, and we prefer to say exactly where the limits are. The Zagora junior suite is on the ground floor, 18 m², with step-free access, an accessible bathroom and its own private patio; the pool, the patio and the ground-floor common areas are on the same level. The rooftop terrace and the first-floor rooms are reached by stairs, and there is no lift. Access from the airport is by private transfer to the car park 100 metres away, then a paved pedestrian alley. Describe the situation to Éric on WhatsApp +212 600 608 608 and he will tell you in writing what works and what does not, before you pay anything.
