Kosher meals are available on request, prepared by a certified external kosher caterer — the riad kitchen itself is not kosher, so strictly observant guests are served exclusively by the certified caterer. We facilitate Shabbat (candles, a calm setting, lower-floor rooms on request), and several kosher restaurants are within reach in the medina. Can the Jewish heritage tour be combined with a Sahara desert circuit?
Yes, and it is a natural pairing: the southern route to the desert passes the mellahs and old Jewish cemeteries of Ouarzazate, the Draa valley and the Todra. Guests usually start with the Marrakech mellah and the Slat Al Azama synagogue, then leave for a desert circuit of 3 or 4 days and come back to the same room at the riad. How many days are needed to reach Merzouga from Marrakech?
Merzouga is 560 km from Marrakech, about 7 to 8 hours of driving over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, through Ouarzazate and past the Todra gorges. Three days and two nights is the minimum: one road day out, one bivouac night at the foot of the Erg Chebbi, one road day back. Zagora, 360 km and 5 to 6 hours away, works in 2 days / 1 night. When is the best season to travel in southern Morocco?
October to April is the comfortable window, with March to May and September to November the best of it: 22 to 28 °C by day and clear skies. December to February is bright but the desert nights are genuinely cold. July and August pass 45 °C in the erg. Is it cold at night in the desert?
From November to February the temperature in the erg falls to roughly 0 to 5 °C after dark, even following a 25 °C afternoon. The bivouac tents have real beds and thick wool blankets and the camp lights a fire, but a fleece, a hat and long trousers are essential for the evening. From April to October the nights are mild. How does a night in a desert bivouac work?
You reach the dunes in the late afternoon and ride out by camel at sunset, 30 to 45 minutes and suitable for beginners. The camp is a circle of nomad tents with real beds and blankets. Dinner is a tagine served under the tent, then mint tea and drums around the fire under a sky with no light pollution. Wake-up is before dawn for the sunrise from the top of a dune, then breakfast and the road back. Dietary requirements are passed to the camp in advance.
Is travelling in southern Morocco safe?
Southern Morocco is one of the calmest and most travelled parts of the country, and the Marrakech – Ouarzazate – Merzouga axis is a well-maintained tourist road. Transport is coordinated in collaboration with an approved licensed transport partner and the visits are led by official guides. Camps are permanent and staffed. Mobile coverage is patchy in the middle of the erg, so leave the camp number with your family.
Can you combine the heritage tour with the spa and a cooking class at the riad?
Yes. Riad Vendôme is the anchor point: the mellah is a short walk away, and between two days of visits the spa books a hammam and a massage while the cooking class with Chef Naïma — 3 hours, market, tagine and couscous, lunch included — is €48 per person.
