In brief — Sahara desert circuits departing from Marrakech
Round trip from Marrakech, from €280 per person. This circuit starts and ends at Riad Vendôme in the Marrakech medina — you keep the same room in Marrakech before and after, and your luggage stays at the riad. Reaching the Sahara near Merzouga means an overnight leg from Marrakech: we say so because the drive is long, and no honest itinerary makes it a day trip. Typical formats are 3, 4, 5 and 7 days, and the programme is adjustable — one Atlas stop can be added or removed.

Sahara desert circuits from Marrakech cost between €280 and €560 per person all-inclusive. Riad Vendôme coordinates 2 to 4-day circuits towards Merzouga, Zagora and the Grand South, including riad accommodation, transport, bivouac, meals and camel ride.
Imagine. The sun sinking over the dunes, the absolute silence of the Sahara, the sand still warm beneath your bare feet. A camel caravan silhouetted on the horizon. Tonight, you'll sleep under a sky where every star seems within reach. Riad Vendôme coordinates your desert circuit from A to Z, departing from Marrakech: Merzouga, Zagora or the Grand South, 2 to 4 days, for couples, families or groups of up to 20 guests. All-inclusive packages from €280 per person.
In brief — Desert circuit from Marrakech
Some journeys change you. The Sahara is one of them. When the last paved road disappears and the first dunes appear on the horizon, something happens: time slows down, silence envelops everything, and the immensity of the landscape reminds you how vast and beautiful the world is. Whether you choose the towering dunes of Merzouga (Morocco's highest, up to 150m) or the wild desert of Zagora and its Chigaga dunes, each circuit is an invitation to contemplation and wonder.
Eric, the French owner of the riad, personally organises each circuit. No anonymous tour operator, no 50-seater bus: your excursion is tailor-made, with a professional driver we have known for years. Back from the desert, Riad Vendôme awaits you with its oriental hammam, heated rooftop jacuzzi and candlelit dinner in the patio — the perfect contrast after the immensity of the Sahara.

Morocco's most iconic circuit. In 3 days, you'll cross the High Atlas via the vertiginous Tichka Pass, discover the Todra Gorges (a breathtaking 300m canyon), and reach the legendary Erg Chebbi dunes. At sunset, you'll ride by camel to the bivouac, where a Berber dinner under a nomad tent awaits. The next morning, the sunrise over the golden dunes is a sight you'll never forget.

For those seeking authenticity, Zagora is a revelation. The road crosses the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest palm grove, where rammed-earth villages seem frozen in time. Beyond Zagora, the track leads to the great Chigaga dunes, among the most impressive and least visited in the Sahara. No crowds: just you, the sand and the stars. In just 2 days, it's the ideal circuit if your time is limited.

Why choose when you can see it all? The Grand Tour combines both deserts in 4 days of adventure. You'll spend two nights in bivouacs, cross the spectacular Djebel Saghro with its lunar landscapes, and discover the full diversity of southern Morocco: gorges, palm groves, oases, dunes and kasbahs. It's our most complete circuit and the favourite of experienced travellers.

The honest version: Merzouga is 8 to 9 hours of road from Marrakech, and the Erg Chebbi dunes cannot be done as a half-day trip or as a day return. The route crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2260 m, which is slow, winding and occasionally closed by snow in winter. A round trip that starts and ends at Riad Vendôme needs seven days to be pleasant: two nights in the medina at each end, the outward leg spread over two days with a kasbah stop, one night at the desert camp, and the return spread again. Anyone selling you Marrakech to the big dunes and back in two days is selling you fourteen hours in a car. From €560 per person for the 7-day Grand Tour including the riad nights. Written quote within 24 hours on WhatsApp +212 600 608 608.
| Day 1 | Arrival at Riad Vendôme, Dar El Bacha. Airport transfer, rooms, mint tea in the patio, dinner by Chef Naima. No hammam today — it is kept for the second day. |
| Day 2 | Medina and souks in the morning, private hammam and a 1-hour massage in the afternoon (€49 per person), dinner at the riad. This is the rested day before the road. |
| Day 3 | Departure from Marrakech by 4×4. Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2260 m, Aït Ben Haddou kasbah, Ouarzazate, Dadès or Todra gorges. Night in a kasbah. Roughly 6 hours of driving, broken up. |
| Day 4 | Todra gorges, Tinghir palm grove, then Erg Chebbi in the late afternoon. Camel ride to the bivouac at sunset, dinner and night under the stars at Merzouga. Around 4 hours of driving. |
| Day 5 | Sunrise over the dunes, breakfast at the camp, then the return leg begins: Draa valley, Agdz, night in Ouarzazate or the Draa. This is the day people underestimate. |
| Day 6 | Ouarzazate, the Atlas crossing again by the Tizi n'Tichka, arrival back at Riad Vendôme in the afternoon. Rooftop jacuzzi at 36°C, dinner at the riad. |
| Day 7 | Free morning in the medina, departure transfer to Marrakech-Menara. |
This is distinct from the one-way Fès → Marrakech circuit, which does not come back to the same city and is covered on its own page. If you have fewer than five days, Agafay is 45 minutes from the riad and gives you a night in a desert camp without the driving — it is a stony desert, not the Erg Chebbi dunes, and we say so rather than let you discover it on arrival.

"An unforgettable experience. The desert camp under the stars, the Gnaoua music, sunrise over the dunes… Eric organised every detail with care. We recommend it 100%."
"New Year's Eve in the Merzouga desert will remain our finest travel memory. The meal was delicious, the atmosphere magical, and the silence of the Sahara at midnight… indescribable. Thank you Eric!"
"Zagora circuit as a couple — 3 days of pure bliss. The riad is sublime, the desert magnificent, and Eric is an exceptional host. Unbeatable value for money. We'll be back for New Year's Eve!"
« We have done the Grand Tour Merzouga + Zagora with family (2 children). The children loved the camels and the bivouac. The journey is long but the landscapes are breathtaking. The riad is a real haven on return. »

The southern road also runs past the old mellahs and Jewish cemeteries of Ouarzazate and the Draa valley: see our Jewish heritage itinerary from the riad.
The best period runs from October to April, with full days at 20-30°C and fresh nights in the desert. Spring (March-April) offers the most beautiful light for photography. Avoid June to September when temperatures exceed 45°C.
All-inclusive packages (riad + circuit) start from €280/person for Zagora (2 days/1 night) and go up to €560 for the Grand Tour Merzouga + Zagora (4 days/3 nights). These prices include accommodation at Riad Vendôme, transport, meals and bivouac nights.
Yes, the camel ride and the night in a desert camp are unforgettable experiences for children. For families with young children, we recommend the Zagora circuit 2 days/1 night, the shortest. The circuits are adaptable depending on the age of children.
Absolutely. Riad Vendôme coordinates circuits for groups of 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 20 guests. The riad can be private hire (up to 45 guests) and the circuit is organised by minibus air-conditioned. Rates sliding-scale from 6 guests.
Merzouga has the dunes of the Erg Chebbi, the highest in Morocco (150m), golden and spectacular. Zagora offers a wilder, less touristy desert, with the Chigaga dunes and the Draa Valley. Merzouga is more accessible in 3 days, Zagora in 2.

Yes — Riad Vendôme regularly arranges intimate desert circuits for couples (honeymoon, anniversary, romantic escapes). The 3-day private 4x4 circuit (Marrakech-Ouarzazate-Sahara) includes: private vehicle with English-speaking driver-guide, overnight in luxury desert camp with private tent (king bed, candle dinner under stars), camel sunset ride for two, return via Atlas with photo stops. Around 750-950 EUR/couple all-in. Add Romantic Stay 4d/3n package at Riad Vendôme (248 EUR/person) for full luxury experience.
The best value couples desert circuit is the 2-day private Zagora trip at 480-580 EUR/couple, including: private 4x4 with driver-guide, overnight in luxury desert camp (private tent), candlelit dinner with Berber music, camel ride at sunset and sunrise, return via Tizi n'Tichka Atlas pass. Combine with Riad Vendôme 3-night romantic stay (couples massage 84 EUR/2, rooftop dinner) for a full 5-day romantic Marrakech-Sahara escape from 1200-1400 EUR/couple. Eric coordinates seamlessly.
Desert circuits start from Marrakech, so you first fly into Marrakech-Menara and base yourself at the riad. There are no non-stop flights from the United States; from New York allow about 8 to 9 hours via Casablanca on Royal Air Maroc, which hubs there. From Canada, Royal Air Maroc runs a seasonal non-stop from Montreal to Casablanca, then a short connection. Most North American guests spend a few days at the riad in the medina before setting off on the desert circuit.
The most popular circuit is the 3-day Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) — Marrakech to the 150m Saharan dunes via Aït Benhaddou, Todra Gorges and the Draa Valley. For more time, the 4-day or 5-day Grand South 4x4 adds the remote Chigaga dunes and Djebel Saghro massif.
Yes. The standard Merzouga circuit is family-friendly for children aged 7+. The 7-8h drive can be broken with stops. Bivouac accommodation has real beds. Camel treks are gentle and safe. Eric recommends the Zagora circuit (shorter drive, 5-6h) for families with younger children.
No. All Eric's desert circuits use English-speaking guides. The driver also speaks English. Riad Vendôme coordinates everything from Marrakech — you communicate only with Eric in English throughout.
Merzouga sits 560 km south-east of Marrakech, roughly 7 to 8 hours of driving over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), through Ouarzazate and past the Todra gorges. Three days and two nights is the realistic minimum: one road day out, one night in a bivouac at the foot of the Erg Chebbi, one road day back. Four days makes the drive far easier and adds the Dadès valley. If you only have 48 hours, take Zagora instead — 2 days / 1 night is enough there.
Marrakech → Merzouga: 560 km, about 7 to 8 hours by road via Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dadès valley and the Todra gorges. Marrakech → Zagora: about 360 km, 5 to 6 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka and down the Draa valley. The two deserts are themselves some 360 km apart (about 6 hours), which is why combining the two needs at least 4 days. Photo stops, mint tea and lunch are built into every road day — the drive is part of the trip, not lost time.
Not for the main roads: they are tarmac all the way to Merzouga and to Zagora, and an air-conditioned minibus is perfectly comfortable. A 4×4 becomes necessary for the last off-road stretch — the piste to the camps at the foot of the Erg Chebbi, and above all the crossing to the erg Chegaga (also spelled Chigaga) beyond M'hamid, which is around 2 hours of dunes and stony track. Riad Vendôme coordinates the vehicle and the driver in collaboration with an approved licensed transport partner; you choose private or shared when you book.
Yes, and it catches most first-timers out. From November to February the temperature in the erg drops to roughly 0 to 5 °C after dark, even after a 25 °C afternoon. The bivouac tents have real beds with thick wool blankets and the camp lights a fire, but pack a fleece or a down jacket, a hat, socks and long trousers for the evening. From April to October the nights are mild and one light layer is enough. Full packing list on our preparation guide.
You reach the edge of the dunes in the late afternoon and ride out by camel at sunset — 30 to 45 minutes, slow and suitable for complete beginners. The camp is a circle of nomad tents with real beds, proper mattresses and blankets, and shared or private washrooms depending on the camp. Dinner is a Berber tagine served under the tent, then drums and mint tea around the fire, and a sky with no light pollution at all. Wake-up is before dawn to climb the nearest dune for sunrise, breakfast at the camp, then the road back.
Southern Morocco is one of the calmest and most travelled parts of the country, and the Marrakech – Ouarzazate – Merzouga axis is a well-maintained tourist road. The circuit is coordinated in collaboration with an approved licensed transport partner — professional drivers who know the passes — and with official guides for the visits. The camps are permanent, staffed and reachable by telephone. Mobile coverage is patchy in the middle of the erg, which is part of the charm: leave the camp number with your family. Otherwise it is common sense — drink plenty of water, cover your head, and never walk off into the dunes alone.
That is how most guests do it, and it is why the riad is the anchor point. You arrive at Riad Vendôme in the Marrakech medina, take a night or two to settle in, leave for the desert, then come back to the same room. On the return day the spa books a hammam and a massage, and the cooking class with Chef Naïma — 3 hours, market, tagine and couscous, lunch included — is €48 per person. Luggage you don't need in the desert stays at the riad.
Send your dates, the number of travellers and the format you have in mind by WhatsApp to +212 600 608 608, or use the form on this page. Éric replies personally, in English, with a detailed programme and a firm quote within 24 hours — no automated booking engine and no deposit taken before you have agreed the programme. Riad Vendôme coordinates the circuit in collaboration with an approved licensed transport partner and official guides, and stays your anchor point in Marrakech. You can also book your room at the riad first.
Riad Vendome is at 217 Derb El Halfaoui, in the Dar El Bacha district of the Marrakech medina. It is a 7-minute walk from Jemaa El-Fna square, close to the Koutoubia and the souks, so you reach the main sights on foot without needing a taxi. A member of staff meets you at the nearest vehicle drop-off point on arrival.
Yes, Riad Vendome can be hired exclusively. The main riad has 12 rooms and goes up to 20 rooms with our second riad 100 metres away, for exclusive hire of up to 45 guests. During an exclusive hire there are no other guests: the pool, hammam, jacuzzi and rooftop are reserved for your group alone.
Yes. Éric, the owner since 2011, handles the accommodation, the airport transfer and the excursions from a single WhatsApp number, +212 600 608 608, with a written quote within 24 hours. You do not book the riad on one site, the transfer on another and the excursion on a third: the schedule is put together in one go, with an approved licensed transport partner for the road legs.
