Agafay or Merzouga: Which Desert to Choose, and Why Time Decides It

The choice depends on the time you have, not on your budget. Agafay is a stony desert of pale hills, 40 to 90 minutes from Marrakech, and it has no sand dunes. Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi are 560 km away, 7 to 8 hours of road over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, with real dunes up to 150 m. With four nights or fewer, take Agafay. From six nights, Merzouga becomes possible without turning your stay into a road trip.

Both are real deserts and both are worth the trip. They are simply not the same journey, and the honest comparison is the one nobody makes on a booking page: one is a detour, the other is an expedition.

What Agafay Is Not

Agafay is not an erg. It has no sand dunes, and it never had any. If you have seen a photograph of a golden dune towering over a luxury camp with the caption « Agafay », that photograph was taken somewhere else, usually at the Erg Chebbi 560 km further east. This confusion is the single most common disappointment we hear about, and it is why this page exists.

What Agafay genuinely offers is emptiness twenty minutes past the last houses: rounded hills of pale stone, no vegetation, no phone mast on the horizon, the Atlas standing behind you, and a silence you do not get anywhere else so close to a city of a million people. At sunset the stone turns pink, and the sky at night is as good as any. It is a remarkable evening. It is not the Sahara, and a page that pretends otherwise is setting you up to be let down.

Choose by the Length of Your Stay

  • 2 to 3 nights in Marrakech. Agafay, and only Agafay. You have one afternoon to spare; use it. Merzouga would eat your whole stay and you would see the medina from a car window.
  • 4 nights. Agafay still. A Merzouga circuit would take three of your four days and leave you no time in the city itself. If the dunes matter that much to you, come back with more days rather than compress them.
  • 5 nights. The tipping point. Merzouga is possible in the 5-day / 4-night format: one night at the riad, the 3-day circuit, one last night at the riad before your flight. Tight, but real.
  • 6 nights and more. Merzouga without hesitation, and you can add an Agafay evening at the start while you are settling in. This is the version we recommend when the calendar allows it.

Notice that budget is not in this list. The two formats sit close enough that money is rarely what decides: an Agafay night from €78 per person against a Merzouga package from €310 per person that includes four nights of accommodation. What you are really spending is days.

The Two Formats from the Riad

The Agafay evening. You leave the riad after lunch and reach the camp in time for the light. Quad and dinner from €75 per person, or the night in a camp with dinner and return transfer from €78 per person. You are back at the riad the next morning for the rest of your stay. Nothing is packed, nothing is interrupted.

The Merzouga circuit, two versions.

  • 5 days / 4 nights, from €310 per person. 1 night at the riad, then the 3-day / 2-night Marrakech to Merzouga and back circuit with half board in the desert, one night under canvas, standard accommodation and transfers included, then 1 last night at the riad. Breakfast and dinner at the riad are not included. Charm accommodation on the circuit: €150 per person more.
  • 6 days / 5 nights, from €380 per person. The same circuit with 3 nights at the riad rather than 2, which leaves you two full days in the medina on either side.

In both versions your large bags stay at the riad and your room is held for your return: you leave with an overnight bag, not a suitcase. The circuit starts and ends here, in Dar El Bacha, a 7-minute walk from Jemaa El-Fna. If You Do Not Want to Choose

Take both, in that order: the Agafay evening in the first days, while you are still finding your feet, then the Merzouga circuit, then a last night at the riad before the flight. It needs six nights minimum and it is the most complete week we sell. Below six nights, we will tell you plainly that it does not fit, because a circuit rushed is a circuit spent in a vehicle.

And if the real question is which of the two real Saharas to pick, that is a different decision and it has its own page: Merzouga or Zagora compares distances, dunes and formats between the two.

Agafay or Merzouga: Your Questions Answered

Does the Agafay desert have sand dunes?

No. Agafay is a stony desert of pale, rounded hills, not an erg. There is no sand dune there, and any photograph showing a large golden dune above an Agafay camp was not taken in Agafay. What Agafay does have is emptiness twenty minutes past the last houses, silence, and the Atlas on the horizon. Sand dunes in Morocco mean the Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, 560 km away.

How far is Agafay from Marrakech, and how far is Merzouga?

Agafay starts about 30 km from Marrakech: 40 minutes to the nearest camps, up to 90 minutes for the furthest. Merzouga is 560 km by road, 7 to 8 hours of driving over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, which is why we spread the outward leg over two days and never sell the dunes as a day trip.

Agafay or Merzouga: which one should I choose?

The choice depends on the time you have, not on your budget. With four nights or fewer in Marrakech, Agafay is the honest answer: you leave after lunch and you are back for breakfast. From six nights, Merzouga becomes possible without turning the stay into a road trip. Anyone who tells you the dunes fit into a short break is selling you the road, not the desert.

Can I see the Erg Chebbi dunes in one day from Marrakech?

No, and we will say so before you book. A return trip to Merzouga is 1,100 km. A one-day version means sixteen hours in a vehicle for a few minutes of sand in the dark. The realistic minimum is a 3-day / 2-night circuit, with one night under canvas at the foot of the dunes.

Is Agafay worth it if I have already seen a real desert?

Honestly, less. Agafay is remarkable for its proximity and its silence, not for its scale. If you have walked the Sahara or the Wadi Rum, treat Agafay as an evening out under the stars, a quad ride and a dinner, rather than as a desert in its own right. The Erg Chebbi is a different experience and it needs its three days.

Which desert works better with young children?

Agafay, without hesitation. Forty minutes of road, a camp you reach before dark, and you can go home if the night goes badly. Merzouga means two long days in a vehicle each way; it works from about eight years old, and it works far better when the outward leg is split over two days, which is how our circuit is built.

What does an Agafay night cost from the riad?

From €78 per person for the night in a camp with dinner, transfer included; the quad and dinner evening is from €75 per person. Both leave from the riad in the afternoon and bring you back the next morning. Exact rate according to your dates, the duration of the stay and the number of people: quote within minutes on WhatsApp.

What does the Merzouga circuit cost with nights at the riad?

Two formats. The 5-day / 4-night package is from €310 per person: 1 night at the riad, then the 3-day / 2-night Marrakech to Merzouga and back circuit with half board in the desert, one night under canvas, standard accommodation and transfers included, then 1 last night at the riad. Breakfast and dinner at the riad are not included. Charm accommodation on the circuit is €150 per person more. The 6-day / 5-night package, with 3 nights at the riad, is from €380 per person.

Can I do both, Agafay and Merzouga, in the same stay?

Yes, and it is the most complete week: the Agafay evening in the first days while you are still settling in, the Merzouga circuit afterwards, then a last night at the riad before the flight. It needs six nights minimum. Below that, choose one, and choose the one your calendar allows.

Where do my bags stay during the desert circuit?

At the riad. You leave with an overnight bag and your room is held for your return, so you are not carrying a large case over the Tizi n'Tichka and into a tent. The circuit starts and ends at the riad, in Dar El Bacha, a 7-minute walk from Jemaa El-Fna.

How do I book, and how quickly do you reply?

You book directly with the riad, not through a platform. Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp at +212 600 608 608 and you receive a written quote within minutes. There is no automated booking engine: every stay is confirmed by a person, and the payment terms are set out in the quote you receive.

Can the whole riad be privatised, and for how many guests?

Yes, Riad Vendôme can be hired exclusively from €950 per night. The main riad has 12 rooms and goes up to 20 rooms with a partner riad 100 metres away, for exclusive hire of up to 50 guests. During an exclusive hire there are no other guests: the pool, hammam, jacuzzi and rooftop are reserved for your group alone.
