Pacing a day in the medina with small children
Two practical points that most guides leave out. First, the heat: between 12:00 and 16:00 from May to September, the medina is hard going for a toddler. We build the mornings around one outing and keep the afternoon at the riad, by the pool, where it stays cooler under the patio. Second, pushchairs: the alleyways around Dar El Bacha are flat and wide enough for a pushchair, but the souks themselves are not — a baby carrier works better there. - A pushchair is awkward in the medina. The alleys are uneven, often narrow, and shared with mopeds and handcarts. Most parents end up carrying the youngest in a sling. Bring one.
- The souks are intense for a toddler — noise, smells, crowding, no room to walk freely. They work far better late afternoon, and in short doses, than at midday.
