The ceremony: Slat Al Azama and the Torah reading

About ten minutes’ walk from the riad, the Slat Al Azama synagogue — founded in 1492 by Jews expelled from Spain — is home to a living community, with services and Torah readings on Mondays, Thursdays and Shabbat. A Torah reading in Marrakech for your son or daughter can be arranged with the community; we liaise on your behalf and confirm arrangements case by case. The walk itself — through the medina to the Mellah, family in step behind the celebrant — often becomes the memory everyone keeps.

The celebration: catering, henna, music

Back at the riad, the evening is yours: kosher catering prepared by the certified external kosher caterer (the riad kitchen itself is not kosher — strictly observant guests are served exclusively by the caterer), a traditional henna ceremony to open the festivities, Judeo-Andalusian music, piyyutim or a DJ on the rooftop, and Chef Naima’s Judeo-Moroccan flavours for the non-kosher tables. Kosher logistics, handled properly

We are precise about this, because observant families need precision. The riad itself is kosher-friendly, not kosher: its kitchen is not kosher, and we never pretend otherwise. All kosher meals for your celebration — the Shabbat dinners, the ceremony banquet, the festive evening — are prepared and delivered by a certified external kosher caterer, served at the privatised riad. Guests who are less strict can also enjoy Chef Naima’s Judeo-Moroccan flavours from the riad kitchen, clearly separated from the caterer’s service. Kosher restaurants also exist in Marrakech for outings. Practical planning: Marrakech is served by direct flights from many European cities and by seasonal direct Tel Aviv–Marrakech flights (Arkia, around 4 hours); Israeli passport holders need a visa. Airport transfers, guest lists across the two riads, dietary charts and the timeline of the day — one contact holds it all, so the parents can actually enjoy the celebration.

A typical Bar Mitzvah weekend

Thursday: arrival, transfers from the airport, welcome dinner on the rooftop. Friday: morning visit of the Mellah and Miaara cemetery; Shabbat preparations — candles, calm, kosher dinner by the caterer. Saturday: Shabbat; for observant families, everything within walking distance. Sunday or Monday: ceremony and Torah reading, then the festive evening at the privatised riad — henna, music, feast. Grandparents get lower-floor rooms on request, short walking distances and quiet corners of the patio; for Sabbath-observant elders, candles and calm are part of the house.
